How It Works

Dr. Tingey recommends sleeping with the Shoulder Pillow in the following positions to relieve pain, stop snoring, and reduce acid reflux. The numbers on the diagram of the pillow below correspond with the instructions for each sleeping position.

On Your Back

Laying on your back on a slight incline reduces snoring while keeping the back and head supported. While lying on your back: Your head should rest on the headrest (#1) and your back on the thinner portion of the pillow (#2). The small of your back (lumbar curve) should be at the lower edge of the pillow. Make sure you don’t lie to low on the pillow.

Snug Position

Simply turn onto your side so the shoulder drops into the cutout (#4). Your head is again on the headrest (#3) just above the cutout, and most importantly, your side chest wall should rest on the thicker portion of the lower pillow (#5).

Hug Position

Lying on your side: Slide the arm down through the cutout (#4) and under the pillow. There is a channel built into the pillow that reduces the amount of pressure on that arm. Again, the head rests on the headrest (#3) and the side chest wall on the thicker part of the lower pillow. Simply flip the pillow over to lie on your opposite side.

Lying With Your Partner

Two shoulder pillows can be placed side by side in various configurations to allow you to sleep comfortably with your partner. Experiment to find out what works best for you. We find that putting the two pillows together with the cutouts adjacent works great for snuggling with your partner on your sides and reduces that “dead arm” that you typically get in the middle of the night.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do you wash the pillow cover?

  • Remove the pillow cover and and wash in cool to warm water with a gentle liquid detergent and dry on low to medium. Remove from dryer immediately to reduce wrinkling. Bamboo comes out of the washer feeling stiff and canvas-like, but this is normal, so don’t worry that you’ve damaged your pillow case.

  • For best results, wash separately from other items, especially towels. Towels produce a lot of lint which can stick to the pillow case and create friction, which causes pilling. Avoid liquid chlorine bleach, fabric softener, dryer sheets, and washer or dryer balls. Harsh detergents can do damage to fine linens and particularly our high quality pillow cover.

2. How long does it take to adjust to The Perfect Anatomy Shoulder Pillow?

  • Allowing time for adjusting to the pillow is super important! Just like many new products you buy (like shoes, or a new phone), there’s an adjustment period. Some people take 1 night, and others take 3-4 weeks to get used to it.

  • This is because you may be used to sleeping on a pillow that’s worn out, and causes you to sleep in positions that cramp your body and distort your alignment, causing pain over time. Once you get used to sleeping with the Shoulder Pillow, the pressure on your shoulder and neck will release and you’ll start to notice you’re waking up with less pain.

  • We suggest giving it at least 30 days to break in. The more you sleep with it, the more the memory foam molds to support your body shape. If at first it feels a little odd, make sure you’re following the diagram (click here for diagram) and placing your body on the correct areas of the pillow. This is so important! If you’re not laying on the pillow the correct way, it won’t work. Once your body adjusts and you get used to sleeping the right way, we’re confident you’ll never go back to your regular pillow!
